Freeride Scoring

One of the things that we are absolutely passionate about  is that we get as close as possible to a fair and accurate scoring system.  Every rider has a right to know before the event how he/she will be scored.  The criteria will be published and publicized well before the events.  It is our intention to be extremely open and up front in every aspect of the scoring.  A rider’s scoresheets will be available for review once the scores have been announced.

Scoring will be done using a set of objective criteria.  The trick list has been developed in close consultation with pro level riders as well as riders who have come up through the ranks and have been competing for many years at different levels.  That being said, we welcome your input, and we will give  consideration to every credible suggestion.

Freeride Format:  The following criteria apply only to the 4 pass Freeride events:

  1. 1.Riders will be allowed four passes and three falls.  If a rider falls a third time, he should clear the  course as quickly as possible so that the next rider can get started.

  2. 2.Each rider will be scored on his best 16 tricks in the four passes.  Point values will be assigned according to the Trick List.  Each slider hit counts as one trick, and will be assigned a point value from 0-60, by a consensus of three judges.  See the Slider Scoring page for complete details.

  3. 3.In addition to the Trick points, style points will be assigned.  There will be three style judges.  Each judge will rank the riders in the division.  At the end of a division, the judges will arrive at a consensus ranking for each rider’s style, and points will be assigned according to the following                           maximum values:  Open Riders: Up to 200 points;   Expert: 160 points;  Advanced: 120 points;  Intermediate: 80 points;  Novice: 50 points.

  4. 4.Open and Expert riders may not repeat tricks.  Tricks with a different grab or other variation will be considered different tricks.  All other divisions may repeat tricks, but only one repeat total per trick variation, and not in the same pass.   Any repeat tricks outside of these guidelines will not receive credit.

  5. 5.There is a 4 trick variation rule.  Only the first four variations of any trick will be counted.  For example:  A rider does 5 indy grabs.  The fifth Indy grab will not be counted, even if all five are on different tricks.  If the loss of the Indy grab makes the trick a duplicate, the trick may not be counted depending on the rules of the division.

  6. 6.No more than 4 Heelside Raley based tricks total will be counted for points in any run.

  7. 7.Setup tricks will be counted if needed, but in the upper divisions, (Advanced and up) no credit will be given for any trick under 14 points.  This means that the only setup tricks that will count in these divisions will be a powerslide to blind and an ollie backside 180.  Also, to get credit for a powerslide, the rider must cut out heelside and break the board loose and hold the backside slide for 2 seconds.

  8. 8.There are no starting and ending buoys for the freeride events.

Scores may be appealed at the time they are announced or posted.  Scoresheets will be available for review.  See the head judge.  It is absolutely a priority that the judging be done fairly with no favoritism whatsoever.  If you have any concerns please bring them to the head judge or an event organizer.  It is our intention to be extremely open and up front in every aspect of the scoring.  We don’t want anybody to leave an event thinking that they were wronged in any way.
